Community spaces

A space is a room in your community. Members post in it, reply to each other, react, and get notified when something new lands. You decide what each space is called, what shape it takes, and which tiers can get in.

Spaces are different from your posts feed. Posts are you broadcasting to your members. Spaces are your members talking, to you and to each other.

How to create a space

1. Go to Membership then Spaces in your dashboard.
2. Click New space.
3. Fill in the details (covered below).
4. Click Create space.

The new space appears in the table straight away, and members see it in their member area the next time they open it.

Space details

Name

Short and obvious wins. "General", "Wins", "Q&A", "Feedback". This is the label members tap, so anything longer than a couple of words gets truncated on a phone.

Description

One line saying what belongs in this space. It shows under the name in the members' list of spaces, and it is the difference between a space people post in and one they are afraid to post in.

Type

Two shapes, and the choice changes how the space behaves for members:

• Feed is casual posts, newest first. The composer says "Share something with the community" and posts do not need a title. Best for day-to-day chatter, wins, photos, quick questions.
• Forum is threaded discussions with titles. The composer says "Start a discussion" and asks for a title first. Best when conversations need to be findable weeks later.

You can change the type later by editing the space, so start with a feed if you are not sure.

Membership tiers

Tick the tiers that should have access. Tick nothing and the space is open to every member.

The space's row shows what you picked under Access: either the tier names, or "All members". Members see the same thing on their side, with a small lock chip naming the tiers a space needs.

The spaces table

Every space you have shows as a row:

• Order with up and down arrows, which is the order members see them in.
• Name and its description.
• Type, either Feed or Forum.
• Access, the tiers required, or "All members".
• Members, how many people have joined this space.
• Status, Active or Archived.

Flip the Show archived switch above the table to bring archived spaces into view.

Reordering

Use the up and down arrows in the Order column. The change saves the moment you click, and it is the order your members see. Put the space you most want people to post in at the top.

Editing, archiving, and deleting

Every row has a menu on the right.

• Edit reopens the same form. Change the name, description, type, or which tiers can get in.
• Archive takes the space out of your members' view without losing anything. Unarchive brings it back exactly as it was.
• Delete removes the space and its gating permanently, and the posts inside it stop being reachable. There is no undo, so archive unless you genuinely want it gone.

Who can post in a space

By default, anyone signed in who can see the space can post in it, including people on a free tier and people with no membership at all.

If you want participation to be something people pay for, turn on Members-only interaction on the membership settings page. With it on, only members with an active membership can post, reply, react, comment, or chat anywhere in the member area. Reading stays open either way, so a curious visitor can still see what they would be joining.

What your members see

Members reach spaces from the Spaces tab of their member area. The tab only appears once they have at least one space they can open.

On the list, each space shows its name, its description, how many members and posts it has, any tier it requires, and a Join button. Joining is what turns on notifications about new posts, so it is worth telling people to do it. Once joined, the button reads Joined and clicking it leaves the space again.

Inside a space, a member can:

• Write a post. In a feed the button says Post, in a forum it says Start discussion and asks for a title.
• Format what they write with bold, italic, underline, lists, and links.
• Attach images, video, audio, and files, and mention other members by typing @.
• Reply to a post, and reply to a reply. Deep threads collapse behind Continue this thread.
• React with emoji.
• Search the space with the magnifying glass in its header.
• Report a post or reply to you. See moderation.

A half-written post is not lost if they navigate away. The composer keeps the draft and offers Continue your draft when they come back.

Points, levels, and the leaderboard

Taking part earns points, and points build a level that shows next to a member's name. Members earn points for posting, for replying, for getting reactions on what they wrote, and simply for showing up on a given day. There is a daily ceiling, so nobody can farm their way up the board in an afternoon.

Members can open the Leaderboard from the top of the Spaces tab and switch it between This week, This month, and All time. You can adjust anyone's points by hand from their member page, which is covered in moderation.
